Where to Stay in Cyprus

Districts, Areas and Overview

Cyprus is compact enough that you can base yourself in one spot and day-trip to most of the island. Paphos is the strongest all-round base for sightseeing, with the archaeological sites, Avakas Gorge, and Aphrodite's Rock all nearby. Larnaca works if you want to be near the airport and don't mind a longer drive to the west coast. Limassol splits the difference geographically but is the least interesting town of the three. Ayia Napa and Protaras are for beach-focused trips and Cape Greco access.

1

Paphos

The strongest base for a first visit. Paphos puts you next to the island's best archaeological sites (the park and Tombs of the Kings are walkable or a short drive), close to Avakas Gorge and the Akamas Peninsula, and within easy reach of Petra tou Romiou. The harbor area has restaurants and bars, the old town has character, and the Kato Paphos tourist strip has all the practical amenities. Accommodation ranges from beachfront resorts to small apartments in the upper town. The Paphos area also has better food options than Larnaca or Limassol. If you're only going to base yourself in one place, this is it. The trade-off: it's far from Cape Greco and the southeast coast (about 2 hours), so if that's a priority you'll want a second base.

2

Protaras

The beach-focused alternative, and a better pick than nearby Ayia Napa if you want sand and sea without the party atmosphere. Protaras is calmer, more family-oriented, and has some of the clearest water on the island. Fig Tree Bay is consistently rated among the best beaches in Europe. Cape Greco is a 10-minute drive. The town itself is a resort strip rather than a real town, so don't expect much character or local culture. But for a second base focused on swimming and coastal scenery, it works well. Accommodation is mostly hotels and apartments, with good variety across price ranges. The downside is distance: Paphos and the west coast are about 2 hours away, so you're committing to the east side.

3

Larnaca

The practical choice. Larnaca is where the main airport is, so basing here eliminates any airport transfer stress. The Finikoudes beach promenade is pleasant, the Kamares Aqueduct and salt lake are right there, and the town has enough restaurants and cafes to keep you fed. It's also roughly central on the island, making day trips to both Paphos (about 1.5 hours) and Cape Greco (about 45 minutes) feasible. The downside is that Larnaca itself is the least interesting of the main towns. It's functional, not charming. If you have one night before or after a flight, Larnaca makes perfect sense. For a longer stay, Paphos offers more.

4

Limassol

The biggest city on the island and the one with the most "city" energy. Limassol has a long waterfront promenade, a marina district with restaurants and bars, and a old town with a medieval castle. It's geographically central, which makes it workable as a base for both directions, but it's not close to any of the main highlights. The Troodos Mountains are about an hour away, Paphos is 1.5 hours, Cape Greco is nearly 2 hours. The city itself has more going on in terms of nightlife and dining than Paphos or Larnaca, and the Carnival in February is the island's biggest festival. Accommodation is generally pricier here. It's a decent base if you want urban amenities and don't mind driving to the sights, but it's not the top pick for most visitors.

For a first visit, Paphos is the default. It gives you the richest combination of history, nature, and coastal scenery, plus it's the most pleasant town to spend evenings in. If you're splitting your stay, Paphos plus two nights near Cape Greco (Protaras over Ayia Napa) covers the full range. If you're coming purely for beaches and don't care about ruins, Protaras or the Limassol coast work.
