Fast 16 Days Itinerary for Southern Africa

Sixteen days, one car, and a part of the world that’s impossible to sum up in just one word. This trip through eastern South Africa (and Eswatini and Lesotho) is less of a chill vacation and more of a let's see how much awesome we can fit into two weeks kinda plan.

I did this trip that way and I wouldn't really change anything. From Bloemfontain I flew to Cape Town, but that's a different story (coming soon-ish).

You'll kick things off along the Panorama Route, where every second stop is either a waterfall, a viewpoint, or both. Then straight into wait, this is real life? territory at Blyde River Canyon, before trading cliffs for wildlife in Kruger National Park. Early mornings, dusty roads, and the constant hope that the next turn comes with elephants casually blocking your way.

Just when you think you've settled into safari mode, the route switches it up again. You'll cross into Eswatini for a completely different vibe, then head to the coast around St Lucia, where hippos basically own the streets at night and crocodiles keep things interesting.

And because this trip clearly doesn't believe in taking it easy, you'll then take on the legendary Sani Pass into Lesotho. Think steep gravel, big views, and a solid chance of wow.

Eventually, you'll roll into Bloemfontein, a bit wiser, slightly dustier, and with a camera roll that got out of hand somewhere around day three.

This itinerary moves. It's not designed for sleeping in or we'll just see how we feel. But that's kinda the point. If you're up for early starts, then you're going to have a very, very good time.

Day 1

Arrival and Transport to Mashishing

Arrive in South Africa and move to Mashishing where you spend the first night. There's not much to see or do in Mashishing but it's a good, peaceful and quiet starting location for the upcoming days.

Day 2

Panorama Route

This day can feel rushed, as it's packed with sights. You can easily stretch it into two or even three days without running out of things to see or do. There are additional waterfalls worth exploring, and the Blyde River Canyon alone can easily fill a full day if you take your time. If you'd rather arrive at the canyon earlier to go for a walk or just relax and enjoy the views, consider skipping a few waterfalls or the Big Swing. It's a fun experience, but definitely not for everyone anyway.

Day 8

Malolotja, Piggs Peak, and the Northern Highveld

A day trip into Eswatini's northwestern highlands. The landscape looks nothing like the Ezulwini Valley: open highland, deep gorges, and very few people.
