Top Things to Do and See in Ha Long Bay
Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site where limestone karsts rise dramatically from emerald waters, creating one of Vietnam's most iconic landscapes. Whether you're wondering what to do in Ha Long Bay, what to see, or the best things to do during your visit, this guide covers the essential stops on most day cruises.
The prices shown here are meant as a rough guide and can vary over time. While I update exchange rates regularly, local prices are typically refreshed only when I revisit the destination.

Luon Cave Area
The Luon Cave area offers kayaking or bamboo boat excursions through a low limestone arch that leads into a calm, enclosed lagoon. This peaceful stop provides close contact with karst formations as you glide under rock arches and past cliffs covered in jungle, sometimes spotting monkeys on the rocks. It's less about adrenaline and more about atmosphere - quiet water, intimate views, and no engine noise.

Notes
- Choice between self-paddling kayak or bamboo boat rowed by local
- Duration typically 30 to 45 minutes
- Peaceful atmosphere compared to main cruise route
- Possible monkey sightings

Sung Sot Cave
Sung Sot Cave, also called Surprise Cave, is the largest and most famous cave in Ha Long Bay. Most day cruises stop here for a visit through its dramatic chambers filled with stalactites and stalagmites, illuminated by theatrical colored lighting. The cave is big enough to handle crowds but can feel busy between 11:00 and 14:00 when most boats arrive.
Notes
- 10 to 15 minute walk up stone steps from the pier
- Wear proper shoes - steps can be steep and slightly slippery
- Visit lasts 30 to 45 minutes total

Ti Top Island
The classic viewpoint stop is Ti Top Island. The climb takes about 10 to 15 minutes. At the top, you get that classic postcard view: limestone karsts rising out of emerald water in every direction. And yep, there are dozens of cruise boats as well. You might think they'd spoil the view, but somehow they don't. The white boats scattered between the dark rocks actually look kinda cool and give the whole panorama some scale. It feels busy, but in a good way. Our tour guide said it's the highlight for most people. I must contest this as I think that passing the cliffs closely is more impressive. If your cruise is short, this is where you get your cliche photo of Ha Long Bay.
Notes
- 400+ steps to the viewpoint
- Crowds at the top, especially midday
- Small beach available at the base
- This is where you get the classic Ha Long Bay photo
